Pierre Lantier (1910-1998) won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1937 and is remembered for a variety of works, most significantly his Sicilienne for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Lantier’s Sicilienne is particularly useful in learning elegance and a flowing musicality. The varying styles, tempos, dynamics and rhythms throughout create an appealing work to performers and listeners alike. The stylistic nuances of Lantier’s piece, along with the evocative melodies make for a graceful work, well worth performing as an intermediate to advanced level saxophonist.
