Alex Lithgow was born the son of a tinsmith in Scotland in 1870. Six years later, his family immigrated to Invercargill, New Zealand, where he eventually became the leader of the Invercargill Garrison Band. When the ensemble needed a new march, Lithgow presented this work his publisher had rejected, and of course, INVERCARGILL became an immediate success. Calvin Custer removed the technical difficulties but ensured that the musical integrity remains fully intact. (duration 2:31)
