This Dover edition of Bach’s great keyboard opus, BWV 988, is an unabridged republication of 1853 edition of the Clavierwerke, Vol. 3, put out by the Bach-Geselleschaft, Leipzig, Germany. These variations were written for one of Bach’s most talented pupils, according to one account. When first published in 1742, Bach labeled the work as “Keyboard Practice, consisting of an Aria with Diverse Variations, for the Harpsichord with 2 Manuals. Composed for Music Lovers, to Refresh their Spirits.”
