John W. Schaum notes that “Hymns may be played in the style of the great classic writers. This arrangement is patterned after Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata.'” The arrangement of this famous hymn is in F Major, 4/4 time, and will be a bit easier to play than the “Moonlight Sonata” while displaying many of the same features as that work, such as octaves in the left hand and a triplet accompaniment with the melody in the right hand. Mr. Schaum does vary the arrangement in places, however, and this appealing version of the “Crusader’s Hymn” will be a wonderful showpiece for the intermediate level pianist. Schaum level 3.
