This Celebration for Brass Quintet was arranged from a larger work entitled Divertimento for Violins and Cellos. Driving scalar passages and energetic rhythms are used to propel this piece. Donald Coakley’s graceful writing is present and Celebration has been suitably adapted for brass instruments. Some brass enthusiasts have made the comment that this work is reminiscent of the Cheetham Scherzo. A lyrical middle section is surrounded by two joyful and lively outer parts in which the two trumpets exchange sixteenth note passages. This work is suitable for college or university level players who are searching for a relatively straightforward contemporary piece.
