Aria for Winds is based on Glen Gillis’ earlier composition, “Nicole’s Aria” for alto saxophone and piano—dedicated to his daughter shortly after she was born. In the Aeolian mode, this piece incorporates some subtle dissonances within a hollow open 5th harmony. Haunting melodic lines combined with colorful percussion writing make this a terrific concert or contest piece.
