In this video, master percussionist Richie Gajate-Garcia builds upon the basic concepts of Latin rhythm studied in the video Close-Up on Congas. Richie begins by showing essential patterns used in playing bongo, timbales, maracas, guiro, and cowbell, while explaining their place in the context of a Latin rhythm section. Richie takes the viewer through the basic rhythm exercises, working logically towards the more intricate patterns. In addition to the exercises, Close-Up on Bongos and Timbales showcases a full salsa band (including Luis Conté on congas) performing three songs that you can play along with. The enclosed exercise book includes the exercises played in the video as well as additional lessons for developing technique. Beginner to intermediate level. (60 min.)
