Wuorinen wrote this short pièce d’occasion as a gift for Deborah Borda, then General Manager of the San Francisco Symphony, to commemorate her new post as President of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Wuorinen alludes to her new job by incorporating a snippet of “Hail to the Chief,” into the fabric of the composition. The work was first performed by three members of the San Francisco Symphony at a private farewell reception, 13 November 1986.
